Hydropower plant history
It is a hydroelectric power plant located on the Prut River, built near the localities of Stânca (Ștefănești), Botoșani County, Romania, and Costești in the Republic of Moldova. A strategic Moldovan–Romanian hydro-energy hub on the Prut River, it was commissioned in 1978, with its main purposes being the generation of electrical energy (approximately 65 GWh per year) and flood mitigation, using a reservoir with a storage capacity of 1.285 billion m³.
Hydropower
Hydroelectric energy, or hydro electricity, is the generation of electricity with the help of turbines driven by water.
Costesti reservoir
The second in size after the one from Dubăsari. It stretches up the Prut River to the village of Viișoara for a length of 70 linear km.

The Stânca-Costești hydroelectric plant is a hydroelectric plant on the Prut River, built near the towns of Stânca (Ștefănești), Botoșani, Romania and Costești in the Republic of Moldova.
The site of the works is located 576 km from the spillway, in an area where the width of the major bed of about 3-4 km is strangled and reduced to about 400 m by calcareous reefs that practically constitute a natural dam.
The geology of the sector where the reservoir is located is quite uniform, consisting of deposits of clayey dusts with sands and gravels underlain by Sarmatian clays and limestones. The reef bed in the location of the main dams is made up of shelly, relatively hard limestones.
The area of the hydrographic basin of the Prut River in the Stînca-Costești section is about 12,000 km², and the multiannual average flow is 81 m³/s. The maximum flow rates are 4,700 m³/sec at 0.1% insurance and 2,940 m³/s at 1% insurance. The minimum observed flow rate is 2.5 m³/s.
